To begin with, I’d like to thank you for checking out our brand spanking new website and my first ever blog post! Feel free to mark this event in your diaries, as I’m sure it will go down in history… I hear those guffaws.
For those of you who aren’t familiar with my work or me, my name is Alistair Watkins-Stuart and I am a self-taught ‘jobbing’ illustrator from Cardiff, South Wales and one half of the dynamic duo that is Slightly Wobbly Designs. I have been drawing since childhood and over the past couple of years have worked my creative little mind and fingers to the bone in order to fashion a catalogue of illustrations to make people smile, sigh and possibly chortle.
When Slightly Wobbly began back in 2010 we weren’t expecting such a warm reception and the continued support of our followers, patrons and stockists has propelled our confidence and hopes for the future onto a whole new feverish level of excitement. With that in mind it felt like the perfect juncture in Slightly Wobbly’s story to take a step back, spend a few weeks in profound contemplation and add a fresh lick of paint to our website and branding.
First on the agenda was composing a new logo. Our original logo was a perfect representation of Slightly Wobbly at the time: cartoonish, retro and very female orientated.
Since then our body of work has evolved into a collection of illustrations, bespoke and otherwise, that caters to men, women and families of all descriptions. In a way it felt like we had outgrown that logo which has led to us putting those cartoon red stilettos in storage and moving onto something fresher.
It’s worth mentioning that my mum is devastated at this loss and has made it quite clear she does not approve. Mother may indeed know best but at the age of 31 I took the brave decision to ignore her advice… that’s one less roasty for me at the next family dinner then.
Anyway, behold our new logo:
It’s quirky and concise with a retro twist and a smidge of maturity. There were some issues with finding a suitable font but we got there in the end with the help of our ruthlessly honest friends and family. Let me tell you, those guys pull no punches and we are perversely grateful!
Once we had the new logo in hand, it was time to wipe the website clean and start again. I thought this would feel burdensome but, on the contrary, it was liberating. Being older, wiser and more comfortable in our illustrated skin meant we could combine elements of our humble beginnings with a vision of the future. Granted, that sounds a bit woolly, but it’s the truth. If there’s one thing I’ve learned over the past few years it’s that staying static as an artist is a huge mistake. In the words of the boundlessly wise Sheryl Crow: “A change will do you good”. You sing it, Sheryl.
At this point, before I sign off, I’d like to make a shout out to Sarah Chong, the computer whizz who has transformed our woefully basic website into it’s gorgeous new incarnation. We couldn’t have done it without you Mrs Chong. Thanks for your patience with my technical ignorance and propensity to drink red wine when I should be paying attention in your tutorials!! #TeamChong all the way!
